Abstract

A survey was conducted to determine the knowledge level of penalties for animal cruelty in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil [date not given]. It was shown that 60% of respondents said they knew animals had legislative protection, while 40% were unaware of this. 18% said they knew some animal protection laws, while 82% were not able to cite any protective law. Only 11% agreed to the 3-month-1-year and a fine penalty for ill treatment of animals. In conclusion, the surveyed population has some knowledge on the penalties for those who mistreat animals.
