Purdue Center for Animal Welfare Second Symposium

Category: Conference
Description: After hosting a highly successful inaugural Spring Symposium this year, the Purdue University Center for Animal Welfare Science will hold its second Symposium May 18, 2016 at Purdue University’s main campus in West Lafayette, Ind. The initial symposium May 21, 2015 attracted more than 130 attendees from across the country for a day of sessions addressing current animal welfare issues. Attendees included students, faculty and staff from at least eight different universities, including Purdue University, Michigan State University, Notre Dame, the University of Illinois, and Ohio State University, as well as industry personnel affiliated with the companion, laboratory and food animal industries, and private practice veterinarians, legislative aides, and media representatives. Topics included agricultural, companion and laboratory animal welfare challenges and opportunities, as well as ethical issues relative to animal welfare. The Purdue Center for Animal Welfare Science is jointly funded by the Purdue Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture as well as the Purdue University Provost's office. The inaugural symposium was held in part to celebrate the establishment of the Center in 2014. The one-day symposium also provides an important opportunity for the exchange of ideas, development of multi-disciplinary collaborations, and engagement of scholars, stakeholders and members of the public interested in animal welfare. Mark your calendar for the May 18, 2016 Spring Symposium, which will build on the inaugural event’s success, and watch for more information in the coming months as the program is finalized. Up to five continuing education (CE) credits will be offered for this symposium.
