Abstract

Four litters of Swedish Dachsbracken and their mothers were observed during weeks 2 to 7 postpartum. All puppies were weighed at regular intervals and the milk and solid feed intakes were measured. The variations in milk intake and solid feed intake were high throughout the period. In general, correlations between milk intake and solid feed intake were small but negative. Pups with a higher intake of solids tended to weigh more at day 49 and had a significantly higher body weight gain between days 21 and 49. Pups with the highest milk intakes were more active towards the mother. Furthermore, there was a highly significant consistency between solid feed intake and body weight of the pups and in solid feed intake between weeks throughout the period. The possible existence of different weaning strategies is described.
