An annotated bibliography is presented of peer-reviewed papers highlighting the human health, animal welfare, and environmental risks (concerning biodiversity in particular) associated with genetic modification. The bibliography is organized according to the nature of the risks in question: (1) risks associated with the expression of the transgene in the genetically modified organism itself; (2) risks associated with the expression of the transgene in non-target organisms (horizontal and vertical gene transfer); and (3) risks inherent in the method of genetic modification itself. A final section covers papers dealing with the safety of GM foods, environmental concerns, and other discussions that could not be easily assigned to any other headings.
