This chapter explores the history, scale and nature of boarding kennels and dog day-care centres. Associated with these businesses, the chapter also discusses the professional pet-sitting industry. This analysis is set within the recognition of the changing nature of human-dog relations and the values associated with pet dogs by their owners/human companions and society in general. Based on the recognition of the changing position of dogs in society in general, and within individual families and human perceptions of the leisure needs of dogs, this chapter discusses the potential future for the boarding kennel, dog day-care and pet-sitting industries.
