An investigation of the sentiments of having a dog : inspirations for the design of a toy dog

This research is aimed to develop a toy dog that provides the pleasure feelings as having a dog, the inspirations to the manufacturers for the design of toy dogs as per the findings of factors of sentiments of having dogs has been included in the investigation. The investigation was carried out by three phases. In phase I, a framework was established to develop a questionnaire for the investigation of the factors of sentiments of having dogs. The data collected in the survey was scrutinized by Principal Component Analysis to study the factors of sentiments. In phase II, another questionnaire survey was conducted for the exploration of the extent of sentimental satisfaction offered by the market available toy dogs. The data collected was analyzed by the technique of Multiple Regression to establish the relationships between the sentiments and the product features of toy dogs. In phase III, the regression equations established in phase II were used to predict the aggregated effect of the product features to meet a particular sentiment of having a dog. The results of the principal component analysis in phase I indicated that the major factor of having dogs for those who did not have dogs was “sense of touch”. For those who had dogs was “sense of competence”, “accomplishment”, “self-esteem”, “self-worth” and “the capacity of being useful in the world”. The investigation in phase II was focused on the major variables of sentiments for those who did not have dogs, i.e. the touch-related sentiments including the patting, stroking and scratching. The findings have indicated that “want to pat” is governed by the variables of “made of fur”, “hardness”, “barking”, “stand up” and “grumble as you grab my tongue”. “Want to stroke” is controlled by the variables of “made of fur”, “hardness” and “barking”. “Want to scratch” is determined by the variables of “made of fur”, “hardness”, “grumble as you grab my tongue” and “barking”. The thesis has proposed the desirable features for the manufacturing of a toy dog for Hong Kong people who do not have dogs. The thesis has covered the desirable features in terms of physical appearance, made of materials, gender, size, behavior and motion. The results of the investigation and conclusion have been drawn at the end of the thesis.
