The aim of this work is to characterize the human-horse interaction including its influence on the selected aspects of the welfare and use of horses. A review was made of the underlying aspects of the mutual human-horse relations, stressing the importance of early contact of a person with a foal, as well as of further development of human-horse relations. Examples were given of studying those interactions and the means of improving the welfare of horses and their safety. The nature and quality of the human-horse relationship is an important factor determining the level of behavioural and physical comfort of horses and the ease and safety during their everyday use. Correctly initiated development of positive human-horse interactions at an early life of the animal may have beneficial impact in terms of lessening the fear with which the animal reacts to stressful situations. It also facilitates the process of teaching and training. The positive character of human-horse interactions results mainly from the knowledge of the horse's behaviour at the subsequent stages of its ontogenesis. Growing interest in the research of applied ethology may help interpret behavioural reactions observed with horses with regard to their relations with humans.
