Abstract |
Paws and Think, Inc. was founded in 2001 as a 501(c)(3) organization to bring the benefits off the human-animal bond to both people and dogs. Our Mission is Improving lives through the power of the human-dog connection. We do this through our Youth-Canine programs, helping at-risk or incarcerated youth learn life skills and a sense of self-worth by teaching them to train shelter dogs, who then become more adoptable. We also have over 100 active owner/handler + dog therapy teams serving our community in a number of ways. Our Reading Education Assistance Dogs® volunteer in elementary schools to help struggling readers, and students needing more attention, to gain both reading skills and confidence. Our Paws to READ teams provide young readers an opportunity to read to a therapy dog in area libraries, including partnering with Indianapolis Public Library and its branches. The Paws to Heal dogs volunteer at St. Vincent Hospital & Women's Center as well as Peyton Manning Children's Hospital. You will also find our teams at Eskenazi Hospital and Riley Children's Hospital. Our Paws to Comfort teams are trained by I-CART/NOVA trainers to bring comfort to all in a crisis or trauma situation. We respond to student and teacher crisis or deaths in schools and any other I-CART call-out where trained, registered therapy teams can bring comfort. We are an organization of nearly 500 volunteers serving Marion County, Indiana and all adjacent counties. Our teams love to support our local colleges and universities by providing stress relief visits as well as opportunities for research in the HAI field.
