In previous book reviews (2013; 2014), I have explored the power of literature to engage students and practitioners in discourse on the complexities of humananimal relationships. Lauren Slater's autobiographical memoir is a beautifully written work that engages the reader and† fearlessly journeys to the complex, dark, and often disturbing aspects of human-animal relationships as well as the fierce attraction and invaluable bond she shares with animals that enables her to survive a traumatic and tumultuous childhood and adolescence.
