Welcome to CIAD—Canadian Intervention and Assistance Dogs. We are an incorporated not-for-profit society that operates following the Societies Act of Nova Scotia.
In Gaelic, CIAD means “primary” or “first”. In 2016, we focused on the needs of first responders. In 2018, we expanded our services to include veterans, which was one of our original goals. We continue to provide service dogs to veterans and first responders who have sustained Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) / Operational Stress Injuries (OSI).
Beginning early in 2018, Wounded Warriors Canada initiated work with schools like ours across Canada to establish national standards and guidelines for prescribing a service dog. Each dog is trained to meet the unique needs of the veteran or first responder, as identified through National Prescriber Guidelines. In 2019 the Prescriber Guidelines were adopted by the qualifying schools.
